“The Dignity Gap: The Overlooked Cost of Compassion”

In The Dignity Gap, Will Pearce shares how survival, empathy, and innovation intersect to reshape the way we think about caregiving and independence. After surviving a near-death cardiac arrest with just a 4% chance of recovery, Will transformed his lived experience into a mission: to restore dignity and autonomy for seniors, caregivers, and the disabled through thoughtful design.

Drawing from his own journey, Will reveals that dignity is more than comfort—it is a necessity. His creation, the Attento Achievement Board, represents independence in a box: a practical tool born from resilience and guided by compassion.

Through personal reflection and practical insight, Will illustrates how purpose-driven innovation can bridge the overlooked gaps in healthcare and caregiving. He shows how empathy, when paired with inventive design, creates solutions that not only ease daily challenges but also restore confidence, freedom, and hope.

This book equips caregivers, therapists, and leaders in healthcare with a powerful perspective: that independence is not optional, and dignity is not a luxury—it is a right.

Step beyond equipment, statistics, and temporary fixes, and discover how true innovation is built on empathy, resilience, and dignity.

“The Dignity Gap” goes beyond assistive devices and innovation.

Will Pearce

In 2017, Will Pearce’s life changed in an instant when he collapsed from cardiac arrest while running the Cooper River Bridge Run. After three and a half days in a coma and a survival prognosis of only four percent, Will made a full recovery—a turning point that reshaped his purpose. Since then, he has dedicated his life to advocacy for the disabled community, using his experience to inspire innovation and impact.

In 2021, Will founded Attento Board, a company committed to creating multipurpose adaptive tools that restore independence, mobility, and dignity. His flagship invention, the Achievement Board, is a lightweight, customizable, and durable assistive tray with a patent-pending peg system. Designed for both rehabilitation and daily living, it empowers users—from seniors to individuals with disabilities—to overcome challenges with confidence.
